Journaling 4 the Non-verbal or Non-writing Soul

Updated: Feb 15, 2019

Do you communicate better without words? Would you like to introduce the concept of journaling to someone who is non-verbal? Try some of the following suggestions keeping these questions in mind: What do you want in your life? What do you need today? How do you feel about a situation or in general at this moment?

Drawing or sketching a picture: Draw a picture of what you want your life to look like. Sketch the items you would like to have.

Painting (finger paints or with brushes): Use color to represent your feelings and emotions. Paint what you want to see in your life.

Dance, acting, or other movements: What does your best day look like? Move around the room as though you are already in your best day.

Music, singing, or chant: Play something on an instrument to represent your mood. Higher notes for light and airy and low notes for upset or angry. Hold notes or sound to represent happy or short choppy notes for angry, upset. Low to high notes might represent confusion or question. Use whatever system works best for you - whatever feels right for you.

If you are working with someone who does not yet know how to write but is capable of speech, ask him/her what his/her painting, drawing, or other means. You can write it down for him/her.
